Why preparation matters
Before construction of a house or other building begins, the plot has to be ready to receive the project. Good preparation makes the work of everyone who follows easier and helps avoid delays.
1. Clearing the site
The first step is usually clearing: removing vegetation, old materials or small structures that will not be kept. If there is an old building on the plot, demolition may be needed before anything else.
2. Setting out and levels
The project engineer or surveyor marks the position of the building on the ground and sets the levels. The following work is based on these, so it is important that they are correct and remain visible.
3. Excavation and shaping
Next comes excavation for the foundations or basement and shaping the ground around the building area. The size of the machine is chosen according to access and the volume of work.
4. Managing the soil
Excavated soil can be kept for backfilling and landscaping later, or removed. It is worth deciding at the start, as it affects the space on site and the transport.
5. Access for the next crew
A ready plot also has practical access: room for trucks, concrete mixers and materials to move. Thinking about access at the start saves many problems later.
In summary
- Clear the site and decide about any old structures.
- Make sure setting-out and levels are clear.
- Choose suitable equipment for excavation and shaping.
- Decide early what happens to the soil.
- Secure access for those who follow.
